I started watching «Game of Thrones» gradually from the first episode (gradually because I was so busy), having heard nothing but great things about it from friends, family, and IMDb reviewers. Plus, with such a talented cast and a brilliant book series, how could it go wrong? The good news is that «Game of Thrones» didn’t go wrong. Not only is it a rare television series that does its source material justice and treats it with respect, but it is on its own merits one of the finest, most engaging and consistently compelling series of recent years.

Visually, «Game of Thrones» looks incredible

A television series so brilliant that you actually have to check that it was made for television when everything is done to such a high standard that it puts many films made today to shame. This is one of the strongest examples of an acclaimed series that deserves every ounce of praise it has garnered. The scenery is spectacular throughout, the sets are extremely atmospheric and easy on the eyes with a truly meticulous eye for detail and the costumes fit the characters perfectly. Then there are the special effects which are some of the best of any television program and are not overused or overused, the scale, detail and how they actually have character and soul are better than many big budget blockbusters. As is the cinematography and editing, which are also cinematic quality.

Again, worthy of a big budget fantasy/action/drama film

You can’t talk about «Game of Thrones» without mentioning the multi-layered thematic, orchestral and atmospheric score and the unforgettable main theme. It’s hard not to be blown away by the quality of the writing, exceptional isn’t a strong enough word to describe how good the writing is. It always has a natural flow, is layered and thought-provoking and demonstrates a wide range of emotions such as suspenseful tension, touching pathos and witty humor. The narrative lines are so well paced, structured with such nuance and attention to coherence, a high emotional level and touch on complex and delicate themes with intelligence and tact. Whenever there is a set piece or a more action-oriented scene there is always a reason, never for the sake of it.

The characters are also a huge part of the charm

Not only are the set pieces done with a lot of epic scale, superb staging, excitement and dramatic tension, but underneath all the scale and flashy attention to detail there is a lot of heart and layering. They are not overlong, nor are there any elements out of place. «Game of Thrones» has characters that are so well developed and as close to real life as possible despite being set in a fantasy world. These characters are not archetypes of heroes and villains (Joffrey is the only one who comes close, the difference is that he is an extremely interesting character with a lot of development who ranks well over a hundred percent on the threat level scale), they have so much more and they have strengths and flaws. The decisions are logical and you don’t appreciate a character less when a decision isn’t the right one because mistakes are acknowledged and learned from.
